Welcome Back to Project 94 Hockey

After redeveloping the Project 94 website and a few additional tools that we will continue to rollout, Project 94 is relaunching the site under Project 94 Hockey and www.project94hockey.com. This new website and platform will help us deliver not only the 94 Morning Report, our daily newsletter, but also consistent articles and content for site visitors. As the NHL regular season comes to a close this week, be on the lookout for upcoming playoff previews!

What’s new?

If you’ve seen on the home page, Project 94 Hockey generated new charts that are interactive and constantly updated. The chart below is the one that is currently on the home page and shows the path of the scoring race, with which Auston Matthews is currently running away. This is an area of the page that will feature new charts and views of on-ice performances.

New Tools

As promised at the beginning of the season, we have been working on new tools and models that will soon be available. First and foremost will be our stats tool that feature not only data insights such as advanced metrics and on-ice event totals, but also chart builders that will users to use charts for their own content and analytics.

In addition to our new stats tool, we have been developing a Player Similarity tool. This tool will allow users to search for players and, based on their stats and on-ice event totals, find players around the league that show similar results. The objective for a tool like this is to find players that, despite goal totals or other commonly used statistics, drive similar results using more granular data.

Lastly, we will continue to enhance and display our SQI (Shot Quality Index) scores. This is a value assigned to every shot taken to assess the quality, based on location, on-ice strength situation, and other variables. Using these variables, the model outputs a probability for each of four shot results: shot blocked, shot missed, shot saved, and a goal. While the goal vs not goal can be interpreted as an expected goal (xG) model, we use all four probabilities to assess the quality of the chance and from there, assign the SQI score.
